No Green Thumbs

First confession: I love to build things, especially things that involve larger tools such as shovels and saws and hammers and drills and lumber and stuff. So for me, garden projects are always interesting and fun — it’s essentially small-scale construction or farming.

Second confession: I’m unable to grow (as in planting and caring for) things other than weeds. That is, of course, a bit of a problem, because I really want to have a nice garden. And I really really really want to have a vegetable garden. Hm 🤔

For me, being able to grow things that one can eat is, in a strange way, the ultimate DIY project. There are quite a few homes in my neighborhood that even have greenhouses, and I have to admit that I’m a bit jealous. One day I hope to have a greenhouse as well, but I still have a long way to go. First, I have to learn how just to grow things. Period.

So why gardening if I’m the least green-thumby person on this planet? Well, aside from being quite therapeutic, there are endless opportunities for all kinds of projects. There is the actual growing-things-you-hope-to-eat part. Then there are various construction jobs — paths, raised beds, patios, and more. And there are intersections with my tech projects — weather and environment monitoring, automated watering systems, and much more.

In short, there’s enough here to keep me busy for a long time. 👨‍🌾
